Scam Alert

Updated:
MARSHALL (KYTX)- Recently the Marshall Police Department has been fielding calls from citizens stating that they had been receiving calls from scam artist.

These citizens state that the scams have been targeting the elderly wanting them to send money on a type of prepaid debit card.

For example: one elderly female stated that a caller identified himself as a Lieutenant with the Clark County Detention Unit in Las Vegas, Nevada, claiming to have her granddaughter in custody.

The Lt. instructed the elderly female to go to the nearest Home Depot and purchase to Reload It cards and load them with $500.00 each and once loaded he gave her a number to call him back.

The Lt. even allowed the grandmother to speak to a person whom she believed was her granddaughter.

The Lt. informed the grandmother that the granddaughter was facing felony charges and that she was not to discuss this with anyone. If questioned by the Home Depot staff, he instructed her to state that she was going on vacation and did not want to use her credit cards and if the bank officials questioned her about such a large withdrawal, she was to tell them that she was buying furniture.

The Marshall Police Department is disseminating this information in an effort to prevent any further victim from being taken by this scam or any scam similar to this one.

These scammers will go to great lengths to convince you that the matter is real and requires immediate action. In this instance this Marshall woman made a few phone calls and found her granddaughter was in good health at her job but was clearly shaken and nearly provided the monetary assistance to help who she believed was her granddaughter.

Below is a link to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada in which an individual can search their inmate database to determine if someone they know is being detained there. It also references the above scam using different methods of payment.
