Husband delivers wife's baby on side of South Florida interstate

(CBS NEWS) - A woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl -- with her husband lending a helping hand -- in their car on the side of a South Florida interstate during evening rush hour Thursday, reports CBS Miami.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue told the station they were in Broward County in South Florida when the big event happened.

The woman, whose name is not being released due to laws, was calm and holding the baby when paramedics arrived, officials said.

"She kind of walked (her husband) through it -- she's a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) nurse," paramedic David Porter told CBS Miami. "And so he caught the baby."

Fire Rescue officials say the couple was heading to a birthing center in Hollywood when the baby decided it was time to make an appearance.

Even though the child was already born when paramedics arrived, they played an important role in making sure the baby was safe and healthy.

They also transported the mother and child to Broward General Medical Center, with the dad following in the car.

"We wipe down the baby, stimulate the baby, provide a little oxygen," said paramedic Rolando Busto. "Mom was in great spirits. Baby was in great health."

Paramedics say both mom and baby are doing well. They were happy to be a part of a joyful occasion.

"These are the better calls," said Busto. "You deal with tragedy day in and day out; it's nice when you get a call like this."

"It's great," said Porter. "This is what we live to do. This is a great experience. A new birth. A new life."

The newborn has an older brother, CBS Miami adds.
