Rose Sunday ceremony heralds new blooms this season

Tyler (KYTX) -- A ceremony to encourage people to visit and see the new blooms at the Tyler Rose Garden took place in Tyler today with the royal court present.

"Our Rose garden should be second to none," Darryl Bowdre, Tyler City Councilman, said.

Bowdre made the proclamation at the service, declaring April 27th as Rose Sunday. This year's Rose Festival Duchess Kathleen Bertram is the 9th in her family to be apart of the court.

Rose Sunday then included Queen Kathryn Peltier, who thanked the people who keep the Tyler Rose Garden in top shape.
"People from all around come to see the famous Tyler Rose Garden," Peltier said.

Tyler boasts the nation's largest municipal rose garden. You can see now that the roses are in bloom 500 varieties of roses.

Peltier, a freshman at UT Austin, says she's looked up to girls in this role before.
"It's such an honor, and it's something I've watched since I was little growing up in Tyler all my life," Peltier said.

This year's theme is Cirque De La Rose. "Vintage circus. And the creativity behind it, what Winn Morton has brought and our coronation chairs, it's going to be fabulous," Liz Ballard, Executive Director of the Texas Rose Festival Association, said.

A scholarship was also presented at the ceremony today. Kayla Webb, a senior at John Tyler High School, is this year's recipient.

The Rose Festival runs October 16th through the 19th.
