Update: More Local Red Cross Volunteers Leave to Help Tornado Victims

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Another person from East Texas is joining Red Cross recovery efforts to help tornado victims.

Cheryl Thomas left from the Smith County Red Cross chapter on Wednesday for Mississippi. She tells CBS19 she's working as a feeding coordinator and will stay as long as she's needed.

Thomas has been deployed at least 50 times before for natural disasters and says every experience is different.

Volunteer coordinators say it's unclear if more East Texans will be sent to the disaster areas hardest hit by the storms.

TYLER (KYTX)- While there are more questions than answers as to what Mother Nature has left behind in Arkansas last night, one certainty is that the American Red Cross will be needed beyond their borders.

The first Red Cross crew will be departing from the American Red Cross Smith County Chapter, 320 E. Rieck Road, Tyler, Texas, mid-day and reporting to Little Rock.

The crew will take an unstocked feeding truck that will load up with supplies upon their arrival in Arkansas.

Additional volunteers and relief vehicles in North Texas are standing by for deployment through the coming days.
