UT Tyler Patriot Classic: where the money goes

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX) -  It won't be long until golfers are teeing off in the 2014 UT Tyler Patriot Classic. This fundraiser benefits UT Tyler's scholarship programs at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine. Last year, the tournament broke a record, raking in $200,000, all for students needing financial help to go to UT Tyler.
Samantha Godwin is a junior at UT Tyler studying psychology. She's also a patriot golf classic scholarship recipient.

"Without it, i wouldn't really be able to be here. And, i wouldn't be able to even think of going to college or reaching my dreams because it's just money and you see the debt. And, it's just rather scary. So, it means a lot that they do this every year."

Godwin says the scholarship has allowed her to focus on school and not worry about how to pay for it.
"Do internships to practice in the fields that i'm interested in, instead of having to work a job to pay the bills."

Which is why she says this tournament is about so much more than golf.

"They take time out of their day, their work, to help people who they probably never will meet."

One of those people heavily involved with the Patriot Classic is Todd Cruthird with Suddenlink, one of the largest supporters of this event.

"Suddenlink believes in our communities. And, one of the projects is probably one of the biggest projects we have in the Texas/OkalahomaOklahomas supporting UT Tyler with the UT Tyler Suddenlink Hole in One."

This year marks the 28th annual Million Dollar Hole-in-One contest.

"It's a personal commitment to me, not just Suddenlink. I mean, anytime you do something, you've got to believe in it. Right? So, as a student myself when i was attending college, my father died when i was 12 and my mother died in my early 20s. So, from a college perspective, it was very, very difficult."

Cruthird says he understands how hard it is for students attending college without a support system.

"So, these scholarships mean a lot to our future kids who are coming out of college in East Texas."
"I'm really glad that i came here." says Godwin. "And, i probably wouldn't have without the scholarship, which is another reason i'm just so thankful for it."

The Patriot Classic consists of the Patriot Golf Classic and the Patriot Hole-in-One. The Patriot Golf Classic tournament will be Monday, May 19th at Hollytree Country Club. The Million Dollar Hole-in-One contest will be Saturday, May 10th through Saturday, May 17th, with finals on Sunday, May 18th.
