U.S. defense intelligence chief to step down

(CNN) -- Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, will step down from his post later this year, a defense official told CNN.

The official said Flynn's decision is purely personal. But he is departing before his three-year term is over.

Flynn is expected to send a note making the announcement to employees of the agency later Wednesday.

The official did not have any information on who might succeed Flynn.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report the development.
