2 dead in Loving Co. oilfield explosion

LOVING COUNTY (CBS 7 NEWS) - An accident in the oilfield earlier this morning killed two and left nine people injured. The loving county sheriff’s office tells us it was a pressure explosion in a well head scattering debris everywhere on site. Deputies say people felt the explosion miles away.

"We got calls from all over about that time wondering what had happened," says Loving County Deputy Chris Busse.

"He called me frantically crying," says Juwana Kinnibrugh of her boyfriend. She says he was one of the 9 injured in the explosion on the RKI site off 652. "He didn't know what he was supposed to do. So he had to drive out here to call 911…[Something] blew up and killed his partner."

The explosion killed two men in their forties from sub-contracting companies. Amos B. Ortega was from Artesia and Roberto Andrea Mandela was from El Paso.

"It's comforting to know he's safe but still scary out here...Be careful, pray for them," says Kinnibrugh.

Deputy Busse says the next step is for the sheriff’s office and RKI to continue investigating what happened.
