Longview school trustees talk two-plus hours Tuesday, make no call on next superintendent

Posted: Updated:
LONGVIEW (KYTX) - After nearly two-and-a-half hours of talks behind closed doors tonight, Longview I.S.D. trustees still haven't named the district's next superintendent.

Trustees say they want to replace Dr. James Wilcox as superintendent by July 1. The superintendent search that hasn't been 100 percent popular among parents and taxpayers.

The list of names of people who applied for the job hasn't been released, but some parents today tell CBS 19 that, regardless of what decisions trustees make, they have concerns with the superintendent search.
In November, Wilcox announced he was retiring as L.I.S.D. superintendent no later than January 2015.
At first, trustees asked Wilcox to lead the search for his successor.

But after two community meetings in march with parents and taxpayers, trustees hired the former president of the National Association of School Boards to peruse more than three dozen applicants, all at $2,500 for two days' work.

Board president Ted Beard says trustees wanted another set of eyes on the application process.

LaKendra Washington has two kids attending Longview schools, and she doesn't like it.

"We should be able to make that decision and not have to go outside and pay extra money for people to come in to do our job," Washington says. "I think the tax dollars needs to be put back into the schools. We don't, we shouldn't have to go outside and hire someone to do our job."

Trustees didn't make a decision tonight. State law requires the district to wait three weeks after naming a finalist before hiring that person as superintendent. L.I.S.D. has until about the first week of June if it wants to meet its own July 1 deadline.
