PATH asking for diapers this May

TYLER (KYTX) - One local nonprofit is asking you to continuing celebrating mothers all month long. This May, workers at PATH or People Attempting To Help are encouraging you to participate in their diaper drive.

"There's a lot of us who have a hard time."

Rosemary Miller says she's been a single mother for the past four years. She depends on PATH to make ends meet.

"Food assistance, diapers, you know, utility assistance."

She says it's not easy raising a child alone, and she's grateful for any help she can get.

"It's extremely helpful because when you get paid week to week, you know, at the end of the week when you can come here, you know you have enough diapers. And, it gives you security to know that your child is not going to get a rash."

PATH executive director Greg Grubb says Miller is one of the 1,300 moms who've received diapers over the past year.

"The demand for those is probably three times that many, really. We could really give that many away. And, these are the people who we've screened and we've talked with. And, we know they're really in need. So, the need is always there."

He says diapers are a necessity for mothers.

"There's really not a way around that. Mothers cannot even drop off their kids at daycare if they don't have diapers. So, it affects people's employment. It affects, of course, public health. It's a big need."

Miller says says your donations are greatly appreciated.

"I would encourage it because there's a lot of them who can't afford them."

Grubb says they usually have plenty of diapers for newborns and younger babies. It's the older sizes they usually run out of. If you can donate those, that would be a big help.

They're trying to collect 30,000 diapers this month. They can't reach that goal without your help!

You can donate diapers to PATH Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

PATH is also teaming up with Carter BloodCare to host two diaper drives and blood donation drives this month.

The first one is this Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. It will be at the Brookshire's World of Wildlife Park. That's on Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler.

The second diaper drive and blood donation drive is Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be at the PATH office on Front Street. If you donate diapers, blood or both, you will receive a coupon to eat at Mazzio's restaurant for free.
