Americans carrying less cash

(CNN) -  A new survey by bankrate.com shows Americans have less cash in their wallets, and it's by choice.
With more options to pay by credit card, debit card and now even smartphone apps, people aren't having to take out cash from the ATM anymore to pay for everything.

Bankrate found 78% of people carry less than $50 in cash with them on a daily basis. 40% carry less than $20  in cash. And 9% said they don't carry any cash at all.
Despite the holiday season security breaches that took place at some major national retailers, people seem to be sticking to the convenience of swiping a card at the checkout, instead of getting cash from the ATM first.
Bankrate recommends using credit cards instead of debit cards so that the money doesn't get immediately drafted out of your account. If you are making a debit transaction, see if you can use a signature instead of a pin number.
And change up passwords regularly. Using the same one for online accounts and payment apps can leave you      vulnerable if a hacker gets access to even one account.
