Police charge pet theft victim with assault, disorderly conduct

TYLER (KYTX) - A Iraqi war veteran in Tyler says his 84-year-old Amazonian parrot was stolen, but rather than charge the thief, police charged him with assault and disorderly conduct.

Joe Cotten tells CBS 19 a lawn care worker brought his parrot to Tyler police station and admitted taking the bird. But when Cotten and his wife went to claim her, police interrogated him, then said he pushed a public service officer and used abusive language.

Cotten has hired an attorney.

Tyler police spokesman Don Martin says surveillance video of the May 5 incident won't be released, because the case could end up in the courts. Cotten is now asking the Smith County Sheriff's Office to investigate -- because the theft occurred outside Tyler's boundaries.
