UT Tyler Patriot Golf Classic Monday

TYLER (KYTX) - It's sunny skies ahead as organizers prepare for the 2014 UT Tyler Patriot Golf Classic on Monday.

Head professional golfer Nolen Howard says this is his sixth year to be involved in the tournament. He's also on the patriot golf classic committee.
"We're excited. It's supposed to warm up a little bit. Our golf course is in great shape. Our superintendent, Chad Decker, has got it just immaculate, so we're very excited to have the event."

He says the best part is knowing that the tournament funds scholarships for students.
"It's awesome to do. You really feel like you impact the youth's lives and maybe get a guy to college who couldn't go without some financial aid. So, it's a real treat."

UT Tyler junior Samantha Godwin is one of those scholarship recipients.

"Without it, I wouldn't really be able to be here. And, i wouldn't be able to even think of going to college or reaching my dreams because it's just money and you see the debt. And, it's just rather scary. So, it means a lot that they do this every year."

Last year, the tournament broke a record, raking in $200,000, all for students needing financial help to go to UT Tyler.
"This year, we're right on track to meet or exceed last year's record."

Howard says that's great news for UT Tyler's future students.
