Instead of giving up, an East Texan commits to CrossFit and loses more than 100 lbs.

TYLER (KYTX) - A young East Texas man almost gave up on himself, after struggling with his weight.  Something nudged him to give a healthier lifestyle another chance.  

Like a lot of us, Nathan Smith didn't feel comfortable working out in the gym with so many fit people around him.  His first attempt at CrossFit ended after just 3 introductory classes, but the trainers didn't give up on him and that made an incredible difference.

"I said I am just going to die early, have a heart attack," said Nathan Smith.
Being 21, it's supposed to be one of the best times in your life.  But Nathan was struggling and almost 400 pounds.

"I had given up. Finally I was laying on the couch one night, just like I did every night because I was so tired. I had no energy," says Nathan.  "I always give the best of my ability in school, but I said I wonder if I give the best of my ability to myself what would happen?"  That started Nathan on a weight loss journey.
"I went straight to the treadmill and walked 90 minutes," says Nathan. 
Nathan also realized he couldn't lose the weight alone and he decided last may, to give CrossFit a try.
"The coaches were very friendly and I felt welcomed, but I would see these athletes in here doing rope climbs and pull ups and I couldn't even do a tenth of that. I had to modify squats, basic body movements," says Nathan.
Overwhelmed with his weight and limitations, Nathan finished his 3 CrossFit classes and didn't return.
"Some of the trainers I friended on facebook.  They would send me messages for weeks, eventually it was months and they said, 'Nathan come back. We will train you one on one.'" 
6 months later... Nathan committed and made his return to Premier CrossFit. He went 4 months without ever missing a class. The first month he lost 30 pounds and 2 pant sizes.
"The biggest thing for me, because I have always been shy and stuck to myself, was it is a cross body workout, not on the treadmill. In CrossFit, you are pushing your body to the  limit every single time. It is tough and you get breathless, but it works out your body and you burn so many more calories," says Nathan.
Nathan complements his hours sweating, and he does that 7 days a week, with good fuel for his body.
"I knew to meet my goal weight I needed to eat proper and healthy and whole foods. Cune taught me the proper nutrition and foods to eat. I
eat a lot of protein and low carbs. I eat a lot of chicken, spinach salad, sweet potatoes," says Nathan.
Nathan has accomplished a lot in a year.  He's more than 100 pounds lighter and stronger than he's ever been.
"I have changed. I have feel so much better physically. It has just changed my spirit and I am happy everyday," says Nathan.

Nathan is so committed to his health.  He drives all the way from Van where he lives and works to Tyler for kickboxing and CrossFit.  An update on his health-- he no longer has check pains and he sleeps through the night.
