Second-grader takes the wheel when mom passes out

GALENA, KANSAS (KOAM) - A fast response by an eight-year-old in Southeast Kansas might have saved her mother's life. The two were heading to the Riverton Elementary School Wednesday morning when her mother fell unconscious behind the wheel.

"I thought I was trying to panic and then I got the idea to grab the steering wheel," said eight year old Abby Porter.

The second grader took over the wheel as the vehicle kept moving."I was driving, then I turned around to get to my dad's house and then this police car came up," said Abby.

It was Officer Jimmy Hamilton with the Galena Police Department."As I got beside the vehicle it looked like a female driver passed out having a medical emergency, and a female juvenile steering the vehicle," said Officer Hamilton. Both vehicles were heading towards an intersection and Hamilton knew he had to act fast. He rolled down his window and told Abby to put the vehicle in park.

"Let her bump my vehicle into the back of me so I can stop it," Hamilton told us. "She said she was scared - she didn't want to do it."The fearful eight-year-old agreed and both vehicles came to a stop - neither had a scratch.Abby's mother was rushed to a Joplin hospital.

Abby's father says he's thankful."Very thankful the good Lord was on the situation and angels were beside those two," said Rodger Porter.

The day was not complete until Abby could return to class."Because I wanted to take my spelling test and tell everyone, everything was ok," said Abby.By Wednesday evening Abby's mother was home resting.
