(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - The son of the man who shot up the Smith County Courthouse in February 2005, killing two and injuring several others, was sentenced to 10 years probation today for pulling a gun on his daughter's mother and several others in a 2013 incident.David Arroyo Jr., 31, of Tyler, was arrested in December following the incident in which he went to his ex-girlfriend's home and pulled a handgun on her and several of her family members.

Jacob Putman, the Smith County District Attorney prosecutor on the case, said Arroyo entered a guilty plea several weeks ago, but was sentenced Friday and received 10 years probation with the stipulations he possesses no weapons and must receive psychological counseling for trauma.

"His girlfriend told us that David is pretty torn up about the events in 2005 and is dealing with a lot of trauma. He was shot that day," he said.

In 2005, David Arroyo Sr., opened fire on his former wife Maribel Estrada, 41, as she arrived at the rear of the courthouse for a family law case involving child custody.

As the incident continued, Arroyo Sr., turned his gun on law enforcement officers and a citizen who rushed to engage the man as he fired a semi-automatic rifle at the courthouse.

When the gunfire stopped, Arroyo, Tyler resident Mark Wilson and Ms. Estrada were dead, and multiple officers were injured, along with Arroyo Jr.

Putman said Friday Arroyo Jr.'s ex-girlfriend testified she is not scared of him and that he shouldn't be sent to prison for the 2013 incident.

"He can still have a part in his daughter's life, but through a court order he has his visitation through kid connection at this time," he said.
