Coin flip decides Ore City council race

ORE CITY (KYTX) - A coin flip mercifully ended 10 days of waiting for an Ore City man who wanted to win election to City Council.

Steven Heim and Jeannette Orms were candidates for an unexpired term on the City Council. It was left vacant when councilwoman Bonnie Caldwell died in December, with one year left on her first term.

Moments after the May 10 election, Heim learned he won by a 48-44 vote tally. Three days later, the candidates learned one of the town's voting machines wasn't counted. That happened May 13, and the new tally ended in a 55-all tie between the candidates.

City Secretary Gail Weir says a special election could have been called, costing the city between $3,300 and $6,300. However, the candidates agreed to settle the election with a coin flip, held Tuesday night at City Hall.
Heim drew an 8 from a deck of cards to call the coin flip instead of Orms, who pulled a 7. Heim called heads, and the coin landed with heads facing the ceiling.
