Health Alert: Double Mastectomy May Not Be Needed

Posted: Updated:
(CBS) - A new study finds most women with breast cancer, who have a double mastectomy, don't need it. Researchers at the University of Michigan found about 70% of women who have both breasts removed do so, despite a very low risk of cancer in their healthy breast. Experts say women who don't have a strong family history or a positive genetic test should consider undergoing a less complicated lumpectomy.
(CBS) - New research shows marijuana may help people who suffer from severe epilepsy. Researchers in Denver conducted a study on a child who was prescribed medical marijuana to treat frequent seizures. They found combining epileptic drugs and a specific strain of marijuana helped reduce the child's seizures from 50 a day to two or three a month.
(CBS) - A sexually transmitted disease may increase the likelihood that men will develop prostate cancer. University of California researchers found the common infection called tricho-moniasis helps the growth of prostate cancer cells in a lab, but they caution more research is needed.
