DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A mother in Dallas has been arrested after admittedly attempting to drown her children in a bathtub while high on PCP, sources tell CBS 11.

A source says Sonja Gardner, 36, was arrested and later confessed to trying to drown the girls because they wouldn’t stop asking for snacks.

Gardner’s 18-year-old son was able to rescue his two siblings, ages 4 and 6, before fleeing the scene himself.

Neighbors reported hearing the young girls screaming before seeing the eldest son run out of the residence with a soaking wet 4-year-old.

He then ran back into the house, only to find the bathroom locked. He kicked down the door and yelled at his mother to release the 6-year-old. When she refused, he fired a gun into the ceiling of the bathroom.

The mother released the child, who was moved to a safe location.

When police arrived at the scene, the teenage son – who has a probation violation — had fled the scene. An aunt had taken custody of the children.

Based on witness accounts of the incident, the mother was arrested and has been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.

Both children in the attack are fine and are staying with a foster family.

The mother also has a 13-year-old, who was at a basketball game when the incident occurred. Police are still trying to locate the teenage son.
