Deputies: 10-year-old accidentally shoots 4-year-old with rifle near Houston

HOUSTON (KHOU)  – An investigation is under way after a 10-year-old child grabbed a rifle and shot his 4-year-old cousin in the leg Saturday, said Lt. David Escobar with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office.

It happened at about 11 a.m. inside a house located in the 1400 block of Danby Heath Lane in Spring.

Investigators said a woman, who doesn’t live in the home, was watching a group of children at the house when it happened.

The 10-year-old child found the rifle in the closet and thought it was a toy, investigators said.

The 4-year-old girl was transported to Texas Children’s Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies said the child’s mother was not home because she and other family members were busy planning funeral for their 9-year-old daughter, who died of sickle cell just hours before the accidental shooting.

The shooting is believed to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed.
