UPDATE: 88 headstones vandalized at Longview cemetery.

Posted: Updated:
LONGVIEW (KYTX) - 88 Historical Tombstones vandalized in Longview. Many of the headstones were over a century old.
Gordon Northcutt shakes his head in disgust as he surveys these toppled, broken, and vandalized tombstones. HIs ancestors were spared, they lay just a few yards away.
"The first reaction I had was a lot of anger, I was really mad to see that a lot of these were broken. But that quickly turned to sadness, because there is a lot of history here." - Gordon Northcutt, President of the Greenwood Cemetery Association
Northcutt is the President of the Greenwood Cemetery Association, he works closely with the city of Longview to keep these old stones looking their best. He says preserving the history here is very important.
"People that are buried here, are some of the first people that moved to Longview. Our founders. "
The cemetery is on the state's list of historical sites, the first-ever cemetery in Longview. It opened in 1887, just 6 years after the birth of Longview.
"I'm just struggling in my own mind of what kind of person would do this."

It is the burial ground of city founder O.H. Methvin, 3 victims of the Dalton Gang bank robbery in 1894, and 37 Civil War Veterans. Longview Police Officer Debra Stiles there are no suspects at this time, but she hopes to bring closure to the families involved.
"It would be devastating, Now we have 88 families out there that have to go through that." - Debra Stiles
Northcutt says he doesn't have an estimate on the damages.
"Many of them might not be broken, some might just be toppled over. We could pick them up and put them back."
The cost will fall on his organization, and the city of Longview. Longview Police are still searching for leads in this case.
If you have any information on this crime, you are asked to call the Gregg County Crime Stoppers.
