Sidewalk to connect families to shops and dining approved

Posted: Updated:
Tyler (KYTX) --    Some families in Tyler are going to find it easier to walk or bike where they dine out and shop. City leaders approved new sidewalks on Wednesday following letters asking for ways to give cars a rest.

"It makes it a lot easier if you can actually walk over there without playing Russian Roulette and almost being hit on Old Jacksonville," Brenda Stratton, a resident, said.

Stratton is one of the parents who wrote to city engineers 5 months ago.
"I liked that they looked at it seriously. On just one request, they don't do it, but there were a few of us who I think made that request and they investigated it," Stratton said.

For her, the concrete opens the door for a bigger issue, giving us a way to move around and addressing the nation's obesity epidemic.

"We continue to talk about being healthy, and one of the easiest things you can do is get out and walk," Stratton said.

She's also hoping to spend less time fueling up.
"Now I'll be able to walk to Fresh and there's no reason in the whole reason in the whole world why I should ever drive to Fresh," Stratton said.

City council members approved the installation of sidewalks on the east side of Old Jacksonville and north of Gentry Parkway on Moore. It comes after a study in 2010 looked at where they may be needed.

"This was obviously in that and we had citizen input as well," Carter Delleney, City of Tyler Engineer, said.
The project to add more sidewalks in both areas is just under $50,000. They'll be installed later this summer.
