26 WWII vets head to D.C. on Heroes' Flight

TYLER (KYTX) - 26 local heroes of World War II are taking off to Washington D.C. Thursday morning on what's called the "Heroes' Flight," courtesy of Brookshire's. They'll get to see all the sights, including the World War II Memorial that was built in their honor.

Three months after his 18th birthday, Zeke Ziober went to boot camp and prepared to serve in the U.S. Navy for World War II. That was about 70 years ago.
"I did everything my country asked me to do, but some people are fortunate that war doesn't necessarily mean bad things. I was very fortunate. Everything i did, somebody was lookin' out for me. " he says.

A brotherhood that remains intact to this day.
"Lots of good friends that i had on that ship. That was a very unique group. And, each one of them were a character."

He says he can't wait to swap war stories with his fellow veterans on this trip.
"My roommate who's going to be with me in Washington- i was reading about him. And, he was in a typhoon in Okinawa, and he and i were probably there the same night."

He says he's looking forward to getting to know them all.
"I got a big kick out of reading about all the history of these guys. Now, i've got something i can ask them about and talk to them about.

Ziober says he can't think of better company to experience the magic of our nation's capital with.
"Washington is an awful beautiful city and i just want to see all the sights."
Congressman Louie Gohmert is going to give all 26 veterans a tour of the capital building.  Ziober says he's looking forward to that.

They will be back around 9:30 Saturday night.  Organizers say if you'd like to welcome them home, get to the airport around 8:45.
