TYLER (KYTX) -  Rice Elementary School fourth-grader, Kiymiya Lamea, enjoys creating beautiful bracelets and headbands made of colorful rubber bands, as do a lot of girls her age. Girls typically wear their bracelets or trade them for bracelets their friends have made. However, Kiymiya has different plans for her bracelets that include feeding the hungry through the East Texas Food Bank.

Over the past few weeks, Kiymiya has sold her bracelets to classmates, teachers, friends and family for one dollar each. Through her sales, as well as her own collection of loose change, Kiymiya has helped the East Texas Food Bank provide 320 meals to those who are hungry.

“I want to help the world,” Kiymiya said. “There are a lot of people that give to others and I want to be one of those people.”

Helping others is an attitude that administrators and staff at Rice Elementary School have worked hard to instill in their students over the course of the school year. To help accomplish this, each grade level sponsored a schoolwide service project in which students worked together to collect books, toys, clothing and more for the community. The action of teaching students how to give as a group can also help them think of their own ideas for helping others.

“I am so proud of Kiymiya. She has a very giving heart and is always doing things for other people,” Shelly Bosley, principal, said. “Our mission at Rice is to teach people to positively impact the world and Kiymiya has done just that.”

Kimiya says she will continue to sell her bracelets and donate her proceeds to the Food Bank as long as people keep ordering them.
