2 drownings in just one week in East Texas. How you can keep safe this summer.

MARSHALL (KYTX) - According to the Center For Disease Control, 2 children under the age of 14 die from drowning every day in the U.S.   A 10-year old, and an 18-year old have died from drowning in East Texas in just one week. Esther Stutes had quite a scare when she was only 6. She accidentally jumped into the wrong side of the pool and she didn't know how to swim.   Luckily, friends were close by and were able to rescue her but her mom Marcia Stutes says it was too close for comfort.

"It scared her enough to give her a healthy fear of the water, but it intimidated her for awhile" - Marcia Stutes, Mom
She says after the fear began to go away, Esther's ability to swim, became a priority.
"I am glad she was able to overcome it, and be able to enjoy this."
Gina Hester has been teaching kids, teens, and adults for 15 years on water safety. She says the biggest problem is people over estimate their own abilities.
"Sometimes when someone receives swimming lessons, a little relaxation occurs. But there is always a risk around water. There is never a reason to take your eyes off a child." - Gina Hester, Swim Instructor

According to the CDC 8 adults, and 2 children die every day from drowning. Just Saturday, a 10-year old was visiting his grandma in Longview. The family lost track of where he was until he was found unresponsive in the back yard swimming pool. On Tuesday, an 18-year old drowned in Lake Hawkins.
Hester says these are tragedies that she hopes to prevent with her school. She says learning to swim, and continuously practicing is key. She adds, have young children, or inexperienced swimmers wear life jackets, never leave young children around water alone, and enforce rules so no one climbs inside a pool or lake without you knowing.
She says regardless of skill level there should always be someone outside of the pool watching over the swimmers.
