Measles cases are on the rise

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX)- Measles cases are the highest they've been in 14 years.

288 cases of measles have been reported in 18 states already this year.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that has cold-like symptoms with a full body rash.

97 percent of the cases have been brought back by Americans traveling abroad.

Doctors urge everyone, no matter the age, to get the vaccine.

"Look and see if you've been vaccinated for measles and if you have not then you need to contact us or go to your doctor so you can get vaccinated," says North East Public Health Immunizations Director Sylvia Warren.

The reason the disease is spreading is because people are not getting the vaccine.

"Spread the word, everybody needs to be vaccinated," says Warren.

According to doctors, the vaccine is both safe and effective.
