Posted: Updated:
UPDATE: The City Council of Athens is discussing last week's fertilizer plant fire during it's meeting.

The city mayor has told our reporters in previous interviews that he intends to discuss the possibility of moving the plant out of town, or removing dangerous chemicals from the plant.

CBS 19 has a reporter at that meeting right now and will bring you details about what is being discussed as we get them.

ATHENS, TX – The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) and the Athens Fire Department, along with Henderson County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Dallas Field Division, announce the conclusion of the scene investigation at East Texas AG Supply in Athens, Texas. The fire occurred on May 29, 2014. All agencies have ruled the cause of the fire as undetermined.

“The fire originated in the northwest quadrant of the building, at ceiling level,” said Athens Fire Chief, John McQueary. According to Chief McQueary, “based on the origin of the fire, the only causes that could not be eliminated are related to an electrical failure.”

State Fire Marshal Chris Connealy said, “Per national guidelines and standards, the fire will be classified as undetermined because the ignition source and the first material ignited could not be determined.”

Weather was not a factor, and there is no evidence or indication of a criminal or intentional act that caused the fire. The State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Athens Fire Department, ATF, and Henderson County Fire Marshal’s Office will finalize the fire investigation report in upcoming weeks. The East Texas AG Supply property was released to the owner tod
