Monitoring your kid's online activity

Posted: Updated:
(KYTX) --  The horrific story out of Wisconsin about two girls stabbing their friend 19 times has parents talking about the dangers online that can have an impression on your kids. CBS19's Jaime Gerik joins us from the newsroom with some tools for parents-- in this digital age.

"You worry as a parent, what's going on out there? What's happening?" Kevin Dilley, a parent and professor at UT Tyler, said.
Kevin Dilley's children are growing up with a different childhood than the one he remembers.

"They get iPads. My kids have Kindles, we have two computers at home. It's the life we live now. We're connected our kids are connected at the earliest age," Dilley said.
And it's a normal fear for parents to worry what kids are exposed to online--especially in the wake of two Wisconsin girls luring their friend into the woods and stabbing her. Police say the girls, both 12 years old, spent months planning the attack using the internet.

Dilley's kids are 10 and 11.
"So it really hit home for me," Dilley said.

He says he's looked into certain monitoring software like Computer Cop and Net Nanny, which give parents control over what sites the kids can log into.
He also has parental controls on the t-vs in his home. But he says communication is key.

"Start to have conversations about what's out there. What's appropriate, what's not," Dilley said.

Both suspects are being charged as adults for attempted first degree homicide. One of the suspects told investigators she was surprised she felt no remorse from the stabbing.
