2014 Tyler Parade of Homes kicks off Saturday

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX) - From appliances to paint finishes, you can get some new ideas on how to upgrade your house at this year's Parade of Homes. It's brought to you by the Tyler Area Builders Association.

The Parade of Homes kicks off  at 10 Saturday morning. Wear comfortable shoes because there are 30 new homes to tour this year! That means plenty of home improvement ideas for you and your family.

"I tell you, what they do with houses these days is unbelievable." says Rudy Wright, a builder at this year's Parade of Homes. He says plenty of today's trends are inexpensive.
"What we've been seeing being really popular is a lot of the custom paint work."

Another way to save money- use faux granite or marble. It looks like expensive rock, but it's really just an overlay at a fraction of the cost.
And the medallions around the lights in this kitchen start at just thirty bucks.

Wright says going green is also becoming increasingly popular.

"What we've been getting a lot of demand on is just overall efficiency. A lot of folks in our customer base- they just don't want a power bill."

Homeowner Jim Wingard is one of those customers.
"We had electric bills that were $600, gas bills that were $600."
But, not anymore.
"They get all their hot water- or 85% of it for the year, free from the sun. And, they get all of their electricity free from the sun. It's a real no brainer in today's market."
"The electric bill will continue to go up. The mortgage will eventually pay off." says Wingard.

One more trend- hidden conveniences that cut down on clutter.
"That's your spice rack. So, when you're here cooking and you want to grab your spices, you just pull it out."

And when it's time to boil water on the stove...
"This is a pot filler here. It enables you to fill your pots on your stove without having to carry a big heavy pot full of water."

Making life easier whether you choose to cook inside or out.
"You could go from being a completely open air, normal patio, to a screened in patio with just the flick of an iPhone button."

He says the possibilities in home improvements are almost endless.

The Parade of Homes begins June 7 at 10 a.m. and runs through Sunday June 15. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and younger.
