An Austin grocer faces a suit over improper sale of beef penis, or pizzle

Posted:
AUSTIN (KXAN) – MT Supermarket and some of its employees are facing a civil suit that alleges they improperly labeled and sold pizzle, or beef penis, for human consumption.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office filed the suit that names the North Lamar location of MT Supermarket where employees sold “non-inspected, adulterated and misbranded beef pizzle as human food.”

The suit alleges a manager and employees ah the supermarket took the pizzle from boxes “labeled inedible beef, not intended for use as human food and repackaged the pizzle in consumer size packages, then labeled the pizzle as human food.”

The suit goes on to say the defendants labeled the packages to indicate the pizzle was inspected and from a registered source.

A judgement in the case calls for $5,000 in fines against MT Supermarket and the employees named in the suit.

Uses for pizzle

In the United States, pizzle is commonly used in chewable dog toys and is occasionally used in specialty glues.

In foreign cultures beef pizzle is typically dried and ground for use in soups and drinks. Sometimes called cow cod, pizzle is thought to be an aphrodisiac.

Pizzle from other animals, specifically deer, is thought to boost stamina and boost performance and was used as such by the Chinese team in the 2008 Olympic games.
