Screws found on the bottom of children's slides at Ill. park

OAK LAWN, Ill (CBS NEWS) . - Officials said several sharp metal screws were recently found embedded into the slides of a park in Illinois, reports CBS Chicago.

According to the station, the screws had been removed from Oak Lawn Memorial Park by Wednesday, and there were no reports of any injuries. However, officials said the 10 one-and-a-half inch drywall screws were pounded into the bottom of the playground slides with the intention of hurting children.

A one-and-a-half inch drywall screw, like the ones found in the bottom of children's slides at Oak Lawn Memorial Park in Illinois.

The station reports the screws - capable of ripping into flesh - were discovered and removed, though the holes are still visible.

"This is not vandalism," Joel Craig, of the Oak Lawn Park District, told the station. "This is, to my way of thinking, a felony because you're intentionally trying to hurt kids."

Three months ago, a 2-year-old was injured fromrazor blades taped to children's monkey bars at a park in East Moline, Ill., over 160 miles away. Parents in Oak Lawn told CBS Chicago that the situation is unsettling.

"We just have to watch out as a parent, regardless of where we go. It's part of our responsibility," said Mohamed Homsi.

"You come to the park, you want to have a good time and be safe, then something like this," said Susan Jones. "It makes you nervous."

Police are increasing patrols in all city parks, according to the station. The Park District is also stepping up inspections of playground equipment across the city.
