Child Safety in Summer Heat

Posted: Updated:
(KYTX) --The weather is heating up-- and temperatures are only creeping higher as we get into summer. In the wake of a child's death, law enforcement is issuing a warning to parents to keep kids out of danger.

Sarah Wilson makes sure she locks her car every time she exits for a few reasons.

"I don't want anything stolen. And if she can't get into it, I don't want another kid getting into it," Wilson said.

This comes on the heels of a tragedy Tuesday afternoon, when 3 and 4-year-old toddlers were found unresponsive after reportedly locking themselves in their dad's truck. Bella Lindstrom didn't make it, but her sister Zoey pulled through.

"The 3-year-old is doing fine, she was in hospital overnight for observation. She has been discharged and is in her mother's care," Shari Pulliam, a spokesperson for CPS, said.
CPS is investigating the case alongside the Smith County Sheriff's Office.
"We are going to be concerned with the supervision of the remaining sibling in the home and make sure that supervision is adequate," Pulliam said.
Police officers say it's never OK to leave a child unattended in a car in this heat.
"When we get to maybe 100 degrees, it'd be about 140 in the inside of the vehicle," James McCraw, with the Tyler Police Department, said.

They even staged a simulation back in May to show the dangers of a hot car. It's all part of the "Look Before You Lock" campaign.

"It's a good idea to check the back seat just as a routine as well as the front seat and just make sure there's no child left behind,"  McCraw said.
