Street Signs Given Newer Designs in Longview. Research Shows They Can Be Seen From Further Away.

Posted: Updated:
LONGVIEW (KYTX) - A project that is expected to take years has begun in longview. Street signs that mark what street you're on  are being exchanged for what research says is a better design for our eyes.   Nicki williams has been driving longview streets for years and she has been seeing a difference in the design of these street markers. She says she likes the newer designs better.
"If I can see it better from a distance, I'll be able to put my blinker on sooner and not have to worry about turning around." - Nicki Williams
The City of Longview's Public Works Department is slowly changing the design from this  to this. The newer signs will be in lowercase, rather than all upper case. The newer signs will also have a white border around the green signs.. Public Works Director Rolin McPhee says reports by the Federal Highway Administration shows this design can be seen further away.
"Not only does it help people find where they are going, but it also helps first responders find where they need to be faster." - Rolin McPhee, City of Longview
He says the signs also have better reflectivity technology. Making the newer designs better at night.
"The lower case letters have a less of a glow around them. Making them easier to see."
He says it also helps in manufacturing the signs, which are all made in house at the Public Works Department. He says the stickers are easier to place within this border than getting them perfectly aligned with these edges.  Williams says she sees the difference.
"WIth the all upper case letters they all seem to run together"
McPhee does not have an estimate on when all the signs in Longview will be replaced, but says it will take years. Neighborhoods with the greatest need for newer signs will be changed first.
