Dog wash-a-thon raises $3K for no-kill animal shelter

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Some dirty dogs got a free bath Saturday, whether they liked it or not. For the second year Peltier Subaru and the organization Pets Fur People teamed up to hold a dog-wash-a-thon.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains how each clean dog is helping the non-profit continue its mission to rescue dogs in need.

With the help of water hoses, shampoo and hands, dogs of all sizes got some extra attention.

"He loves it he loves it, he knows he looks good."

Debbie Laningham, owns a black lab named Sam.

Sam was one out of about 150 dogs who were bathed during the second dog wash a thon.

"It's actually free to the public."

For sam, bath time isn't so bad but that's not the case for all the dogs.

Although some of these pooches have better things to do, toughing it out helps dogs who don't have owners...for each dog bathed, Peltier will donate $25 to pets fur people.

"But it's a chance for us to hopefully make some money and continue to be able to provide services to the people in east Texas."

Gayle Helms is the executive director of the non-profit. Its' one of the only no-kill pet shelters in east Texas.

"It's very encouraging to have the community want to support us," Helms said.

Through donations the organization is able to continue their mission of maintaining a "life-sustaining" animal sanctuary.

"He was going to be sent to a shelter," said Laningham.

She was able to save Sam from a shelter life, but hopes through events like this, animals who do end up in shelters, will have a chance at finding a home.

In all, 141 dogs were given baths. Adding up to more than 3-thousand dollars in donations.
