Father and Son Celebrate 10 Years of Donating Blood

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Even after all these years, Mike Grisham still remembers the day he almost lost his hand after falling on broken glass as a 3-year-old. "Cut everything in there," Mike said. "Tendons, main arteries, everything." Donated blood saved his life and it's a gift he's now repaying.

He visits the Baylor Scott & White Blood Center every 56 days with his son, Austin. "Ever since I started, we've come together and do it as a family," Austin said.

After a decade of giving, the father and son hit the five gallon mark this week, an accomplishment that staff member Ashley Davis says is incredible. "It's a huge thing," Davis said. "Getting five gallons, you have to come in consistently, five to six times a year."

Every donation is a pint and every pint can be used for two people, which means the father and son have potentially helped save 80 lives. "It makes me feel good, it makes me feel warm because I know somebody who needed it would have received it," Austin said. It also gives the duo time to catch up in a unique way, but they say five gallons is only the beginning of their journey to give back.
