McLennan County Phone Directory Misspells "McLennan"

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- It's a late spring tradition: waking up to the new phone book on your doorstep. But this year, some central Texans awoke to find out they don't live where they thought they did.

You don't have to flip many pages in the new YP directory to see a big ol', Texas-sized typo.

"That's a pretty easy catch," one resident said as she opened to the first page.

"Whoever is the editor did not do their job," said another woman.

You might not catch it at first glance, but when you see it...

"Is 'McLennan' spelled wrong?"

Yeah, it is. "McLennan" is spelled wrong. The county the directory serves is misspelled in the directory.

"L-e-n-n-o-n," one county resident spelled out as he read it in the yellow pages.

"Supposed to be an 'a,'" said another.

It's not even buried in the 300-or-so pages. Just open the front cover, and it's right there on the first page. It's in big print, too.

"Somebody needs to teach them how to use spell check."

"When I get my name in the phone book I'd like to make sure it's spelled right."

You know, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt here. Maybe we've been spelling it wrong. Heck, maybe the county's namesake, Neil McLennan spelled his name wrong.

I mean, it's possible, right?

Or maybe the editor is just a huge Beatles fan?

"It's pretty weird."

Maybe not.

"Wonder if it's the only thing that's misspelled in here."

Maybe they just ran out of the letter 'a'?

"Probably done in New York. What do you expect?"

Darn Yankees.

No word on how many of the directories were passed out this weekend, but McLennan's population is right around 234,000. Surely some were skipped, but that's still a lot of typos passed around.

We put a call into YP's media line. No response yet.
