Arrest made in Arizona priest shooting, police say

Updated:

(CNN) -- Phoenix police said Monday that an arrest has been made in a shooting last week at a Catholic church that left one priest dead and another gravely wounded.

Police Sgt. Steve Martos confirmed the arrest, but provided no additional details. A news conference was planned for Monday afternoon.

The Rev. Kenneth Walker was fatally shot and the Rev. Joseph Terra was wounded in the shooting late Wednesday at Mater Misericordiae (Mother of Mercy) Mission Catholic Church.

According to police, Terra made a 911 call about 9 p.m. Wednesday reporting a burglary at the church. When officers arrived, they found both priests badly wounded.

A vehicle was also missing from the church property, police said, but it's unclear if anything else was taken. Police found the vehicle hours later, abandoned.

Terra was able to speak only briefly with the officers before being taken for treatment. Walker died on his way to the hospital, according to police.

A funeral Mass was being held Monday for Walker, 29. He was a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, a small community of priests founded in 1988 and dedicated to reviving the traditional Latin Mass. Terra, 56, is also a member.

Terra was moved out of intensive care over the weekend and is expected to make a full recovery, according to CNN affiliate KPHO.

The church where they worked is in an area of Phoenix described by a Catholic blog as "deserted and dangerous at night."
