Cliff Where Home Set On Fire May Face Demolition

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) -- There was quite a spectacle on a cliff along a lake in Central Texas last week.

A home teetering over a cliff was safely demolished by fire.

We all know now what happened to that castle on the cliff. The million-dollar dream home that had to be set on fire last week to keep it from plummeting into Lake Whitney.

And now, the crumbling cliff at the center of it all may face a similar fate.

"I don't think I can recall in the seven-and-a-half years I've been here, blowing the side of a cliff off," says Hill County Judge Justin Lewis.

There is serious discussion of using explosives to slice off the piece of the cliff that is dangling 90 feet above a popular portion of Lake Whitney.

The move would help protect this home, right next door. The crack is on his property too.

"What they would do is drill down 30 like feet and then put shape charges in there and blow it, like cutting it with a knife," says Hill County Emergency Manager Tom Hemrick.

Right now, this is just a proposal. But, according to some, including Rob Webb, whose home was the one set on fire, this might be the best idea.

The problem now is money. It may cost $150,000, and no one seems to have that cash on hand.

"Hopefully somebody will be a hero and come down from State of Texas and make this possible disaster go away before it happens," said Webb.

Hill County Judge Justin Lewis and Emergency Manager Tom Hemrick have reached out to the feds to see if money is available.

If the money is secured, and everybody gets on board, this could happen quickly.

They are worried the longer they wait, the more chance there is for the cliff to break off, fall into Lake Whitney and seriously injure boaters who are just trying to enjoy their summer.
