Local Pediatric Patients Honored With Medals

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- 5-year-old Aydin Davis is all smiles and laughter. You'd never know he's been in and out of the hospital his entire life. His mother, Regina says he's had 30 surgeries since he was born. "We're preparing for number 31 on June 30th," Davis said.

Aydin was born with Cat Eye Syndrome, a rare condition that affects things like his heart and kidneys. He got a little encouragement in the form of a shiny new medal on Wednesday, a gift that Davis says means a lot to her son.

Army Marathon Race Director Ed Bandas was looking for a way to use 400 leftover medals and quickly realized no one deserves them more than the patients at McLane Children's Hospital. "You can't buy that kind of happiness," Bandas said after awarding the first medal to Aydin.

Doctors, nurses and even parents will have the chance to nominate courageous kids who spend a lot of time inside the hospital. The first two medals were given out on Wednesday and the hospital will keep awarding them until they run out. They come with a special certificate explaining each child's achievement.
