Belton Teen Continues To Defy The Odds

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Two years ago Belton High School Student Casey Casilhas was hospitalized with a brain tumor and told she would never walk again, but on June 5th she walked the stage on graduation day. It's a feat this one- time varsity tennis player was told she would never achieve.

"I was preparing myself to walk across that stage from like day one of senior year,” said Casey.

In December 2011, Casey suffered complications from surgery to remove a brain tumor. Doctors told her parents she would never walk or talk again, but to this day, Casey refuses to be discouraged.

"I'm talking, I'm eating, I'm just about doing everything that I would never do,” she said.

Casey has remained diligent in her efforts. She's spent the last two and half years working with therapists at Scott and White. They continue to help her regain her motor skills and rebuild her strength. They have watched her make incredible progress.

"When she first got here she was having trouble just even moving around, rolling in bed, it took at least one person pretty much lifting her to move her from her wheel chair to another chair to another mat, and now she can do a lot of those things on her own,” said Dominic Salazar, one of Casey’s physical therapists.

Casey's ultimate goal is to be able to walk on her own. She's made a lot of headway, but she still has a long way to go.

"Her biggest obstacle now is her balance,” said Bobby Casilhas, Casey’s father. “She's getting the strength back but she still doesn't have the balance and that's what we're trying to work on.”

When it comes to defying the odds, Casey gives credit to all those involved, including her therapists,     her parents and especially her friends.

"Having them in my life made me over accomplish like every obstacle I went through,” she said.
