Supporters speak out for teen facing life in prison for selling pot brownies

(KEYE)- Dozens of protesters stood in front of the Williamson County courthouse on Thursday. They're supporters of Jacob Lavoro.

The 19-year-old is accused of baking and selling pot brownies -- and is facing life in prison for the alleged crime. "I'm not a criminal, I'm just a kid," said Jacob Lavoro to his supporters. About a hundred of his supporters gathered outside the Williamson County courthouse prior to a pre-trial court hearing.

They held signs, sold shirts and talked about the move to decriminalize marijuana. Jacob is accused of baking and selling pot brownies. He's charged with a first degree felony and faces five to 99 years in prison. We asked Jacob what he felt when he first learned about the possible sentence.

"It was sickening to me. I first found that out when I was in jail and I almost threw up when I heard it, actually I did throw up. I turned white in my face," he said. "Murderers get less time than that and the fact that my son could go to prison at all is something that I can't even get my head around," his mother Jane Lavoro told us.

In court, Jacob's attorney, Jack Holmes, filed a motion to suppress the evidence. His attorney is accusing investigators of failing to identify themselves as police officers before they entered Jacob's apartment. He's hoping that will get the case thrown out.

The next hearing date is set for August 6 at 1:30 p.m. Lavoro's attorney expects the lab results to be available at that time. Those results will show exactly how much THC was in the brownies.
