Killeen Mom Donates Kidney to 14-Year-Old Daughter

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) – Sandra Oldfield is only 14-years-old. But during her young life she’s already made history.

Last week on June 11th Sandra became the youngest transplant patient at Scott and White Memorial Hospital.

A trip to the dentist ten months ago is what started it all. Sandra’s dentist discovered her high blood pressure and after medical testing, doctors found her kidney function was only at 20%. She was diagnosed with end state renal failure, and doctors said she would need dialysis or a life saving transplant.

“Not only did Sandra and her parents accept the difficult news with grace, but her parents never thought twice about being a donor for their daughter,” pediatric nephrologist Alicia Acosta said.

After testing, Sandra’s mother Dorothy was a perfect match.

Scott and White Memorial is the only transplant center between Austin and Dallas, but transplants with children is a different specialty involving a more technically difficult procedure. Families like Sandra’s would usually have to travel hundreds of miles.

Recently Scott and White Memorial has doubled their transplant capabilities and added more specialized equipment to offer kidney transplants for children admitted to McLane Children’s Hospital. And on June 11th Sandra was their first child patient.

Doctors say Dorothy’s kidney took instantly to Sandra, and they are now at their Killeen home recovering.

“We are a strong Army family, and my wife is the heart of it. I love you for what you did for Sandra,” he said to his wife.

And when Sandra was asked how she felt about the transplant? The shy 14-year-old smiled from ear to ear and responded, “I think it’s one of the greatest things in the world.”
