Family fishing day draws dozens to Tyler State Park

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KTYX) - Several kids and adults got a little more acquainted with nature today for the Texas Parks and Wildlife, family and kid fishing event at the Tyler State Park.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains how outings like this, help create life-long memories.

Resting at the edge of the lake with your feet in the water is great on a sunny day... If you're not trying to catch fish....

Zane Hahn and his band of siblings are spending time together at the park for the Family Kid Fishing day. With all the splashing, none of them have had any luck, but little Austin Hahn is hoping to reel in his favorite fish.

"They say their catfish because they have those whiskers and they call it a fish because it's a fish."

Everyone participating isn't a fish expert like Austin, and that's where parks representatives like Boyd Sanders step in.

"Life's better outside, people are made to be outside," Sanders said.

All year long different activities are held to encourage people to take advantage of outdoor activities...and this fishing event is the big one for the summer.

"That's what state parks are all about, is making memories with family."

Multiple stations ranging from tying knots, baiting your hook, and types of fish, were set up to help new fisherman get started.

"One of the greatest experiences life long experience is catching his first fish, and you can almost ask anyone and they can almost tell you where they caught their first fish."

For Thompson Lee, he's making new friends and sharing a special kind of memory. "I kissed a fish, it was not that bad... Well it was a little slimy."

After this fishing trip, these kids are sure to make even more memories.
