Rain brings good fortune to area farmers

Posted: Updated:
(KYTX) -- Gardens below are getting a little boost from above-- painting a picture of crops bright and flourishing.

"I'd like to think it's trying to get back to normal, we haven't had the droughts like we've had. And it's making things a lot easier this year," Dennis Oefinger, Owner of The Veggie Stand in Tyler, said.

You won't hear Oefinger complaining about the rain.

"The tomatoes are wonderful right now, the peaches are extremely sweet. We've had a lot of sunshine, lots of rain and that makes for a very good crop. Same thing with the blackberries," Oefinger said.

Showers across East Texas create a buffer for some of the harsh conditions later. The moisture almost a shield. Cities like Tyler, Longview, and Lufkin are still well below average rainfall totals for the year.

"When things start to dry out, and it gets unbearably hot like it did, the plants they are going to die," Oefinger said.

Owners here say they've had a bumper crop of onions and potatoes. Production is 4 times what it was last year, partly thanks to the weather. And the rain in the forecast this week, won't put a damper on spirits.
"It's going to be a tough day for picking. But other than that it's just fine," Oefinger said.
