Longview LEAD Academy gives students non-traditional way to diploma

Posted: Updated:
LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Tristan Lopez went to Sabine High School until he dropped out in April. He started mowing lawns to make money, but he was later invited to join LEAD Academy. It's a Longview I.S.D. campus for students considered at-risk because of low academic performance, teen pregnancy, homelessness or just dropping out.

Within a month, Lopez earned his high school diploma.

"It was the easiest thing I've done. It was easier than sitting in a classroom. It's all right there in front of you," Lopez tells CBS 19.

According to the Community College Review, employers and the military prefer applicants who have a diploma over those with a G.E.D., and students with diplomas get access to certain financial aid grants not available to applicants with a G.E.D.
