KCEN) -- Summer rotations are in full swing, as many military families change duty stations, and there are some ways to take some of the hassle out of relocating.

Fort Hood is called “The Great Place,” but considering it’s the largest military installation in the Free World, it could also be called “The Great Big Place.”

So as Fort Hood families come and go, it's easy for them to feel kind of small, among other things.

“At first it was stressful, because we wanted to get the perfect place for the kids to get used to,” says Specialist Simon Hernandez.

He and his family arrived in central Texas from Washington on June 6.

His first battle was finding a house they liked that was actually available.

His wife Chloe says, “It’s just scary, because you could be floating and not knowing where you're going to be going."

Area realtor Ryan Smith says local housing is steadily moving from a buyer’s market to a more balanced one, as the economy and infrastructure become more welcoming.

Even though the home-buying trend is tipping away from their favor, the Hernandez family victoriously found the right home just miles from post.

That growing economy could also be a bonus.

It means Chloe is seeking work as a massage therapist in an area where unemployment sunk to 5.9 percent from 7.1 percent this time last year.

The cross-country move presented yet another obstacle, especially when it comes to helping their kids adjust.

Simon says he tells them, “Well, we're going to go to a different place, we're going to meet new people, make new friends, you get to go to a new school.”

On top of that, the Hernandez’s arrived before the shipping company that was carrying most of their belongings.

“My husband had to sleep on a couch, and we got a couple pots and pans for that week that our stuff wasn't here,” Chloe says.

Each installation has a relocation office that, among many other things, loans household items out to families for free.

“Anything that they may need, we're here to work with them. If we don't know the answer, we'll call around and get the answer for them,” says Fort Hood Relocation Readiness Program Manager Shirley Quick.

Staff provides checklists and information about housing, finances, career help, TRICARE changes and much more.

It’s assistance that can make moving more of an adventure than a fight.

As Simon tells his kids, “It's going to be stressful, it's going to be weird, but it will be worth it.”
