Cost changes coming to downtown Tyler parking

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX) - It'll soon cost you more to park in downtown Tyler, but you'll also have more options. Tyler City Council members approved to change meters around the courthouse from .25 an hour to .50 an hour.

The hike affects about 200 meters in the the core downtown area, which includes around the square and courthouse. Remaining meters farther away will stay at a quarter an hour.

"I'm never going to be here that long anyway so that quarter won't make a big difference," Trace Holder, a customer today, said.

What you'll pay in the new downtown parking garage has also been established. City council members approved rates at $1.00 an hour with a max of $5.00 per day for parking on weekdays.

For people who are downtown frequently, you can also buy a parking tag at an estimated $70 per parking space per month.

City leaders are also looking into installing more modernized meters, which will accept credit cards instead of solely change.

All of the changes are expected to be implemented Sept 1st. City engineers say the new Fair Plaza parking garage is set to be finished in late July, giving the public some time to park for free while they try out the new feature.
