Tyler becomes a Purple Heart City

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX)- Tyler City Council proclaimed Tyler a Purple Heart City, during today's regular scheduled meeting.

“Tyler has a long history of strong support for this nation’s veterans,” said Mayor Martin Heines. “Smith County is home to nearly 18,000 veterans and we are honored to receive the Purple Heart City classification.”

Tyler has a unique opportunity to take one more step towards being the most veteran friendly community in America.

Thanks to Nick Sciarrini and Lloyd Jones, who lead the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Tyler has been proclaimed as a Purple Heart City honoring those who have been so brave in defending America’s freedoms.

In 2011, the City appointed a Mayor’s Veterans Roundtable to develop and implement a Community Blueprint for supporting and enhancing veterans’ services in the Tyler community. The Roundtable focuses on employment, education, housing, medical care and mental health.

One of the outcomes of the Veterans Roundtable is the Veteran and Military Growth Initiative (VMGI). The VMGI outlines more than 40 strategies and tactics for veteran-focused community growth, to bolster the Tyler and Smith County economy as well as demonstrate Tyler’s never-ending support for its veterans and their sacrifices.

“Numerous nonprofit services have grown and improved in Tyler,” said Heines. “The goal is to provide a forum to learn and share best practices and to bring key stakeholders together to collaborate in assisting those who have served our country.”
