Storm damage hits East Texans hard

Posted: Updated:
(KYTX) - Power outage numbers have dropped way down across the East Texas region, but damage from Tuesday's storm is causing big headaches for some homeowners.

Tom Anderson calls the afternoon storm a doozy.

"The rain was terrific, the wind was blowing hard, and we heard this thump where something had hit the roof. My wife and I saw where the limb had hit the roof in two places and knocked a hole in the roof," Anderson says.

Thankfully he and his wife were in the den, far from where the tree fell. Anderson says the damaged area was a corner of the house he had recently added on.

"It's a closet. A special closet for my wife," Anderson says.

He says his wife was the one who went out later after the storm to see the damage.

"She said you better call your insurance adjuster. Those were the words exactly!" he laughs.

He followed his wife's advice. He'll be getting an estimate tomorrow morning.

And he's not the only one. Another house down the street from Anderson's, on Pecan Street, has a big tree problem. Tuesday's angry winds ripped the roots from a huge tree right out of the ground and it toppled onto the house.

Those homeowners may have gotten the worst of it, but lots of people were left in the dark after the wind and rain blew though East Texas.  Oncor reported at least 5,000 outages just in the Tyler area Tuesday afternoon.  Swepco reported around 4,000 in the Longview area.

The storm hit Longview pretty hard too, tearing down trees and putting a lot of homeowners in the same position as the Andersons.

After the big drought in 2011 a lot of people trimmed their trees to make sure the branches weren't dead and wouldn't fall onto their houses.  Anderson wasn't one of them. He said he hasn't trimmed his trees in 5 or 6 years, and he won't go that long ever again!
