Friends, Colleagues Remember Fallen Police Chief

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Flowers, photos, and a single black cowboy hat graced the stage at Temple Bible Church Wednesday, as officers stood watch over the casket of a man they say was taken from this world far too soon.

"Chief Dixon was the type of guy that he'd give you the shirt off his back, stop and help anybody he could, a real, real friendly guy,” said Sgt. T.J. Cruz with Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

"He was a very honorable person, and he took care of business and he took care of the people wherever he worked at,” Bell County Precinct 3 Constable Thomas Prado said.

Prado had known Chief Dixon for 18 years, and he was the first officer to respond to the scene the night Dixon was shot and killed.

"It was horrible,” said Prado. “To see your friend, fellow worker, fellow officer, it was the worst you could imagine."

Chief Dixon took the reins at the Little River-Academy Police Department one month ago, but he was no stranger there. He had briefly served as the police chief there eight years ago before moving to Cameron to work as a Milam County sheriff's deputy. People in Academy knew him and they were thrilled to have him back.

"He was easy to get along with, he didn't stress out over everything and the people in Little River-Academy are really going to miss him,” said Lt. Donnie Adams with the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

"He was a genuinely good guy,” said Bell County Sheriff’s Deputy Iole Pannell. “There are not a whole lot of men around that are just that genuinely nice, sincere, and that was Chief Dixon."

Chief Dixon's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Temple Bible Church. Full Police Honors will follow at the Bell County Expo Center.
