UPDATE: HENDERSON CO. (KYTX)- Family and friends have identified the victim as Harry Smith, of Malakoff, Texas.

Malakoff Police Chief Billy Mitchell reports the 15-year-old was with friends when he ran in front of the train. Chief Mitchell said it has been reported that Smith told his friends, "Come on, let's see if we can beat the train across the tracks", and then all three began running towards the crossing, and realized they were not going to be able to out run the train, and attempted to stop Smith.  His friends stopped, but Smith did not and was struck and killed.

Friends say Smith had just graduated 8th grade and was going to be a freshmen when school started back in the fall.

(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - One person died Thursday in Henderson County after being struck by a train.

Union Pacific Spokeswoman Elizabeth Hutchinson confirmed a male pedestrian was killed in Malakoff around 2:40 p.m., near Lane Street.

She said the train was headed to Laredo from Arkansas and carried 81 cars of various materials.

“Our thoughts was with everyone who was impacted by this tragedy,” Ms. Hutchinson said, adding support staff would be on hand to counsel the crew on the train.

She said trains can be quiet for their size and for residents should be safe and always assume a train is coming when near tracks.

Officials are still on scene, and phone calls to the Malakoff Police Department have not been returned.
